What starts as one member’s SIOR journey can become a legacy that spans generations. Through SIOR's Legacy Series, we’ll spotlight the families who share a connection to SIOR and explore how membership, mentorship, and professional excellence have been passed down through the years.
In this edition, David and Frazier DeVaney, SIOR, wrote about their experiences, advice, and their father/grandfather, Chester DeVaney, SIOR.

-
What is a favorite memory that you have shared with your son/father at an SIOR Event?
My favorite memory with my father was attending our first SIOR East TN chapter meeting together in Nashville. It was exciting and an honor to meet with a group of professionals I had heard him talk about for years, and now to be considered their peer. With my son, my favorite memory was receiving the chapter email announcing his application approval and the upcoming member vote. I knew he would be accepted, but it was a truly special moment getting to cast a vote for my own son.
-
How has SIOR shaped you as a broker, and do you see those same qualities in your son as he builds his career as an SIOR designee?
Earning my SIOR designation is the single most important accomplishment of my business career, second only to the privilege of working alongside my father for many years. Being an SIOR means doing things the right way, every single time, and holding fellow SIORs accountable to a higher standard. It is amazing to watch my son understand this responsibility and set that same high bar for himself.
-
Were you excited when Frazier decided to become an SIOR and follow in your & your father’s footsteps?
I was thrilled, especially knowing how proud his grandfather would be. It represents a true three-generation legacy that my father passed down to both my son and me.
-
The commercial real estate industry has changed tremendously since your father joined in 1980. What do you think your father would say is the biggest change, and what shifts were the most impactful to him?
My father became an SIOR in 1980, and I believe the immediate access to information and modern technology would completely blow him away—much like how AI is poised to change the way we do business today.
-
What legacy do you hope to leave for the next generation of brokers?
I hope to be remembered for doing business the right way and for always treating people with respect.
-
Do you have any advice for someone who is just starting out their SIOR career?
Get involved and stay involved. Never hesitate to ask questions, as SIOR members are always more than willing to help.
Hear from Frazier DeVaney, SIOR (SIOR since 2025):
-
What is something that your father or grandfather had mentioned to you about SIOR that made you want to become a part of the organization?
My dad and grandfather always described SIOR as more than a designation but a way of doing business. Their respect for the organization made me want to earn a place in that same community once I began my real estate career.
-
What is your favorite memory that you have shared with your father at an SIOR Event?
One of my favorite memories was visiting the Louisville Slugger Museum with my dad during an SIOR event. We discussed building a trusted name through consistent actions.
-
Has being a 3rd generation SIOR opened any doors that otherwise might not have been available to you?
It has created introductions and relationships that may have taken longer to develop on my own. My dad's and grandfather's reputations may help open a door, but I still have to earn trust, produce results, and build my own reputation. SIOR has helped me do just that.
-
What would your younger self say if he knew that you are now an SIOR member, like your father/grandfather?
My younger self would be incredibly proud but probably surprised. Growing up, I knew SIOR was important and a large accomplishment, but I did not fully understand the experience, production, and commitment it required.
-
How have the values passed down through your family influenced your career and leadership style?
The Golden Rule has always guided how my dad and grandfather did business: treat others the way you want to be treated. That means being honest, respectful, and doing the right thing. Those values align closely with the SIOR Code of Ethics and influence how I work with clients and colleagues.
-
You are the third generation of SIORs in your family—was there a defining moment when you realized you wanted to continue the family's legacy?
As my career progressed, it became clear to me that I wanted to obtain my SIOR designation to show that I was building a successful network. When I submitted my application to join SIOR, knowing that my dad would be able to vote on my acceptance, just as he once joined alongside his father, made the accomplishment especially meaningful.
-
How has being part of the SIOR community supported your growth and success?
The SIOR community and East Tennessee Chapter have been extremely supportive. Members genuinely want to see one another succeed. That support extends beyond real estate.
